With it being TWOSday AND National Margarita Day, I couldn't help but think back to this "Tacos and Tutus" baby shower we threw for a friend back in May 2017.
It was meant to be a couples shower, and since it was in May, we decided to run with the tacos theme, and, since it was a sweet little girl, I had to throw in some tutus!
Color Scheme:
When planning baby showers, I always like to stick with the nursery colors/theme if you know them so that some of the decor can be gifted after the shower. That's exactly what we did in this case - we stuck with the lavender and navy color scheme mom was using for Baby Girl's nursery!
Invitation:
Since we were using Navy and Lavender (which aren't usually typical "fiesta" colors) I had to get a little creative so I designed a custom talavera-inspired (Spanish tile) pattern that served as the basis for the invitations, party signage, water bottle labels, and thank you cards. I LOVE how it turned out, and, in my opinion, it conveyed the fiesta feel perfectly.
Food:
We do a lot of tailgates around here, and one of the crowd favorites is always our taco bar, so I knew we needed to do this for this even too. It is super easy to make happen too - just gather all of your favorite taco ingredients, and lay them out for guests to make their own tacos, nachos, burritos, etc. Always a hit!
For dessert, we had pinata cupcakes in navy wrappers (just vanilla cupcakes that I cored, and filled with lavender chocolate candies) that were decorated to look like tiny ballerinas with piped "tutus" and a fondant heart as the bodice.
Drinks:
I love doing signature drinks for my events and usually even try to coordinate colors if at all possible. For this event, I knew I wanted to offer a margarita of some sort, and then also another, non-alcoholic beverage for guests (and Mama) to have a special drink as well. I made a non-alcoholic lavender lemonade that was the perfect lavender hue to match the party theme, so I put my former bartender husband to work making a darker hued margarita to match as well, and he came up with this Blackberry Lime Margarita (he even made the blackberry simple syrup) that was a huge hit. Here's a similar recipe if you want to make your own! We served them in margarita glasses and even had purple sugar for the rim. We also offered Mexican beers, and purple juice pouches for the kiddos.
Decor:
As I mentioned above, I love using/creating decor that can be used in the nursery, and, since the baby's name was being revealed at the shower, I decoupaged coordinating scrapbook paper onto wooden letters to spell out her name, and hung it, along with handmade tissue paper flowers, over the food table. For the guests tables, I kept it simple with lavender tulle, and navy vases with lavender sprays on white table cloths, while the food, gift, and drink tables had navy and lavender table cloths.
Activities:
We had a piñata for the little ones, as well as a diaper raffle for every one who brought diapers (we gave away a taco night basket with margarita glasses, margarita mix, tequila, and a gift card to order from your favorite Mexican restaurant). It was a hit!
Favors:
In keeping with the theme, I got tiny plastic margarita glasses, tied lavender tulle around the base to look like a tutu and filled them with lavender and white Canel's gum (the gum you often find in Mexican restaurants and markets). I put it on the entry table with a sign that said "Please take a treat because you are "tutu" sweet for "popping" by!"
While it wasn't perfect (I've learned a lot since then) AND the weather was not our friend that day, I love how all of the details turned out!
